RESEARCH/DISSERTATION AREAS IN OB/GYN

Research and dissertation writing is an essential part of training in any field of medicine and Obstetrics and Gynaecology is not an exception. There are different areas within this specialty where one can do a study, research or write a dissertation.
Below is a list of some areas and a short summary of the various areas.

Family planning
Family planning allows people to attain their desired number of children and determine the spacing of pregnancies. It is achieved through use of contraceptive methods and the treatment of Infertility.

Female genitourinary infections
This deals with infections involving the female genital and/or urinary tract i.e Vaginitis, cystitis, urethritis, cervicitis etc.

Gynecologic oncology
Gynecologic oncology is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on cancers of the female reproductive system, including ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, vaginal cancer, cervical cancer, vulvar cancer etc. 

Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery
Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery refers to surgical techniques performed with a digital camera connected to a telescope that is inserted either into the abdomen (laparoscopy) or through your cervix into the uterine cavity (hysteroscopy).

Obstetrics and maternal/fetal
This includes studies that relate to pregnancy, maternal and fetal outcomes.

Pediatric and adolescent gynecology
Pediatric gynecology is the area of medicine that specializes in diagnosing, treating, and managing conditions that affect the female reproductive organs in children and adolescent 

 

Placenta
The placenta is a temporary organ that connects the developing fetus via the umbilical cord to the uterine wall to allow nutrient uptake, thermo-regulation, waste elimination, and gas exchange via the mother’s blood supply; to fight against internal infection; and to produce hormones which support pregnancy. Research areas could include characteristics, position and other placenta factors that affect pregnancy outcomes.

 

Preterm birth
Also known as premature birth, is the delivery of a baby before 37 completed weeks’ gestational age. Research in this area could relate to prevalence, risk factors, and other factors that affect maternofetal outcome.

 

Reproductive endocrinology and infertility
This include research in areas related to human reproduction including infertility, assisted reproductive technologies, reproductive surgery, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, polycystic ovary syndrome, developmental problems, and issues related to reproductive hormones.

Urogynecology
urogynecologist is a physician with special training in urology, gynecology and obstetrics who focuses on the evaluation and treatment of non-cancerous conditions concerning the female pelvic organs and their supporting muscles and tissues, as well as pelvic reconstructive surgery..
